In December a small group of us met at Wilton’s Bush to view the rare white rata tree (photo right) which was in flower at the time.  This tree was a little uninspiring if one expected a full-on display of flowers. However the staff at Wilton’s Bush think the tree may not be around too much longer, so it was a really worthwhile viewing.  We enjoyed a wander around the Bush before heading off for a coffee and chat at Crofton Downs. A very pleasant wind up of activities for the Garden Group for 2023.

In April The Gardening Group visited a private garden in Ngaio.  It was a calm sunny day and people enjoyed wandering around the garden admiring the layout and plants. An afternoon tea was then enjoyed.

The Gardening Group left the inclement weather of Wellington behind in late January, and joined the Waikanae Garden Trail. They were lucky with the weather - just very light drizzle and still warm. They met up for a lovely lunch at Relish Cafe and thoroughly enjoyed the day out!

The Garden Group visited the magnificent garden of Bob and Alison Maysmore in Paraparaumu. We were shown a video about the development of their garden, which just started off as a flat bare lawn with a few trees. After loads of top soil and various organic fertilisers were used for contours, a lovely garden was created.  We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea and then had plenty time to look around the garden.  Thank you Alison and Bob.

The Garden Club visited ‘’Kaicycle,’’ a regenerative and organic urban farm in Newtown. Most people took the bus from Khandallah at 12.30, which was a little added education to those people who do not normally take public transport.

Kaicycle is developing techniques and models to productively grow food in the city while working within natural systems to regenerate soil to ensure the production of nutrient-dense food.

We were given a guided tour round the site by Kate, who explained all about the workings of Kaicycle. Their composting system takes compostable scraps from homes, offices and small businesses and recycles them into living compost. They offer a bicycle-powered compost collection service that operates in Wellington City and the surrounding suburbs. They are beginning to offer a compost drop-off service for homes.

The food they produce is sold via a community supported agriculture scheme, shared with volunteers and donated to community food projects. They offer various educational workshops and sessions during the year. These range from seed sowing and propagation, garden design and preparation, and compost building and maintenance.

It was a most informative visit, added to by the lovely sunshine. Afterwards people visited Ken and Heather’s home for afternoon tea.
